Create a template for a hike
Last updated July 24, 2026
A template is a special kind of pack that lists the gear participants need to bring — as placeholders rather than specific items. Each hiker then forks the template and swaps every placeholder for gear from their own inventory.
Templates are the fastest way for a hike organizer to share a required kit list without prescribing exact brands or models.
Create a template
-
Go to Packs.
-
Click New template (next to New pack).
-
Give it a name (e.g. "Sarek 2026 - required kit").
-
Optionally set season and conditions.
-
In Bulk paste, list one item per line. Use headings to group by category:
# Shelter Tent (3-season) Groundsheet # Sleep Sleeping bag (comfort -5C or better) Sleeping pad # Cooking & Food Stove Pot -
Click Create template. Each line becomes a placeholder row.
Add the hike briefing
Open the template and edit Field notes. This is where you put:
- meeting point and time
- route overview and daily distances
- water sources
- emergency contact info
- any gear rules (e.g. "no cotton")
Field notes are rendered as markdown on the public page — headings, lists, and links all work.
Share it
Publish the template like any other pack (see Publish a pack) and send the public URL to your participants. Point them at Fill a template with your gear so they know what to do.
Review participant packs
Once participants fork your template, their resolved packs appear in the Participant packs section on your template's detail page. You can see each hiker, how many placeholders they've resolved, and their total pack weight — useful for a pre-trip gear check.
