    Understand the weight breakdown

    Last updated April 23, 2026

Right Packing automatically calculates three numbers for every pack — and shows a category breakdown so you can see exactly where the weight lives.

    The three numbers

    • Base weight — everything you carry that isn't worn and isn't consumable. The most-quoted number in ultralight communities.
    • Worn weight — items you have on your body (boots, shirt, watch).
    • Total weight — base + worn + consumables. The honest "what's actually on you when you start walking" number.

    The category breakdown

Click the weight section in your pack to expand the breakdown. Each category (Shelter, Sleep system, Clothing, Kitchen, etc.) shows:

    • Total grams in that category
    • Percentage of base weight

This is the fastest way to find where to cut weight: usually one or two categories dominate.

    Why grams matter

All weights are stored in grams to keep math precise. Even small rounding errors compound across 30+ items.
