Join a hike from a link
An organiser invited you by email, or sent you a hike page link that looks like rightpacking.eu/hike/<handle>/<slug>. Here's how it works.
1. Open the invite and sign in
- If you were invited by email, open the invite link and create your account with the invited address - the invite only works for that address.
- Confirm your email. We keep your invite waiting, so you land straight back on the hike.
- If you already have an account, just sign in.
2. Your gear list is created for you
As soon as you join, we copy the organiser's template into a private gear list named after the hike. You don't have to copy anything yourself.
If something goes wrong during that copy, your hike page says so and offers a Create my gear list button. One click and you're back on track.
3. Read the hike info
On your hike page you'll find the dates, location, the organiser's instructions, and any suggested gear. Read the instructions carefully - meeting point, pace, food plan, safety.
4. Fill each row with your own gear
Your gear list starts as placeholders - descriptions of what to bring, not specific products. For every placeholder:
- Click Choose gear.
- Pick the matching item from your library, or add a new one on the fly.
- Adjust quantity if needed.
Don't own something yet? The public library has a generic stand-in for every kind of gear ("Backpack", "Rain jacket", "Water filter"). Add it, then set the real weight and details once you know what you're bringing. Generic items start at 0 g, so they're marked in the picker as a reminder.
The hike page shows your progress - "12 of 30 rows filled" - and the gear list itself shows how many rows are left.
5. Weigh it up
When every row is filled, open the pack and check the weight breakdown. If it's too heavy, look at consumables and worn weight before dropping essentials. See Understand the weight breakdown.
Share with the organiser (optional)
You can let the organiser see your list so they can give feedback before departure. It's opt-in and you can switch it off at any time.
Update as you go
Your list is private to you and yours to edit any time before departure - add gear, mark items as worn, add field notes. After the hike, keep it as a record of what actually worked.
